About Us
The Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association (NSSSA) is a student-led organization that helps high school students across the province grow as leaders. We believe that leadership isn’t about having a title — it’s about learning how to make a difference, work with others, and build confidence in yourself. Since 1992, NSSSA has been offering student leadership conferences across Nova Scotia to build leadership skills, create new opportunities/bonds, and make long-lasting connections with students from all over the world.

Our Mission
Every year, NSSSA runs conferences and events that bring students together to learn, connect, and grow. These events are planned and led entirely by students, giving everyone a chance to step up, try new things, and discover what kind of leader they can be.
Our goal is to help students build real skills that they can use in school, their communities, and the workforce.
Regions
NSSSA offers events throughout the province, broken down into five regions:
- Cape Breton/Victoria (CB-V)
- Strait
- Chignecto
- Metro – Halifax Regional Municipality
- Sou-West/Valley – Southwestern Nova Scotia & Valley
What are Conferences?
Conferences are held in each of these regions every single year. These all-inclusive events are either called Junior Conferences or Regional Conferences.
A Junior Conference is for approximately grades 8-10, depending on number of students in the region, and is a smaller version of Regionals. This is extremely useful to new NSSSA members who are just starting their leadership journeys.
A Regional Conference is for grades 9-12, and is the highlight of the year for each Regional Cabinet. These events are bigger, longer and even more EPIC. Regional events are typically overnight events held on Saturday and Sunday.
A Provincial Conference, led by Conference Committee, is a 4-day long event held at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, every May long weekend. This exciting event is attended by over 300 students from across Nova Scotia and beyond.
Skillbuilding Sessions
Every NSSSA event features peer-led “skillbuilding” workshops in small groups.
Skillbuilding isn’t a typical lecture or or classroom. They include interactive activities, games and discussions where attendees practice leadership in action.
- Work in small groups to solve challenges and share ideas.
- Build communication and teamwork skills.
- Learn how to lead with empathy and confidence.
- Reflect on your strengths and how you can use them to help others.
Each group is led by skillbuilder(s) — one or more trained student leaders who guide discussions and helps make sure everyone feels included and supported.
Skillbuilding is where friendships form, confidence grows, and leadership skills start to click. At NSSSA, everyone is equal, included, and never judged.
Our Approach to Leadership
We believe everyone can be a leader in their own right. Leadership isn’t just standing at the front of the room — it’s about showing kindness, listening to others, and willingness to take initiative. The NSSSA helps you explore what kind of leader you are, and how to use those strengths to make a positive impact in your school and community.
Why It Matters
Being part of the NSSSA is more than just fun — it’s an experience that helps you grow and learn more about yourself. You’ll learn how to communicate better, work in teams, and feel confident leading in your own way. The lessons you take from our conferences last far beyond the weekend — they stick with you for life.
